This Saturday 15 June 2019 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
WEAAD is held annually to raise awareness of acts which cause harm to an older person, carried out by someone they know and trust like a family member or a friend. Harm may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.
With over 21% of Boroondara’s population over the age of 60, we are committed to providing a resilient, safe and inclusive community for older residents living in our municipality. In recognition of WEAAD, here are some ways older people can protect themselves from elder abuse:
Stay connected with trusted family, friends and/or neighbours. Plan for the future. Consider future needs including Power of Attorney, as well as financial and living arrangements. Seek independent advice before making significant changes to financial and/or living arrangements. Develop a support network. Establish a group of trusted personal and professional relationships. Ask for help as soon as possible. For further information regarding WEAAD, visit the Seniors Rights Victoria website.
If you know or suspect that someone is at risk of elder abuse, contact the National Elder Abuse Hotline on 1800 353 374 or Seniors Rights Victoria on 1300 368 821.
Please also consider wearing something purple on Saturday 15 June to show your support for WEAAD and our older residents.
