Council aims to create and support events and opportunities for our community to come together and enjoy our public open spaces and reserves.
The weekly Hank Marvin Market has been held at Royal Avenue Reserve since 7 April. The event permit is for the period 7 April – 23 June 2019 and the operator was advised from the outset that any extension to the permit would be dependent on the results of a local resident survey and further consideration of impacts to the park and local amenity.
The results of the local resident survey found that many residents supported the market. Other residents expressed concerns regarding parking, use of open space for commercial purposes and competition for local traders. The winter weather has also seen the grass in the park deteriorate due to the market operating every week.
In late April 2019 Council resolved to introduce a municipal wide annual Expression of Interest process to manage events in public open spaces.
The process will identify all suitable event locations within Bayside including the Royal Avenue Reserve and invite suitably qualified organisations to apply. The new process will provide transparency and consistency to the granting of event permits in Bayside.
Expressions of interest will open in October 2019. The Hank Marvin Market is welcome to apply for a permit through this process.
