Larger space for Nuriootpa Dog Park

Council has approved extra funding to expand the size of the northern dog park.

A $7000 Council top-up will increase the size of the Nuriootpa park to its maximum capacity, estimated at 2500-2700 square metres.

The decision follows feedback from dog park users that the proposed footprint did not provide sufficient space.

Mayor Bim Lange said the Penrice Road site has many constraints, including its proximity to a flood zone.

“For that reason we can’t extend south, but if we expand to the west and north the park will be significantly more visible and also more irregular in shape, which is actually preferred by the Dog and Cat Management Board,” he said.

Council also resolved to defer investment in the southern dog park at Williamstown while it explores an alternative, larger location at Doug Lane Reserve.

Mayor Lange said it was not possible to ‘scale up’ at Queen Victoria Jubilee Park without encroaching on the existing playground.

However Council noted Doug Lane Reserve is not under Council ownership, being State Government land, and lacks both formal parking and water, which may attract additional, unbudgeted costs.  More work is to be done prior to any updated consultation with the community. 

The northern and southern parks are being made possible through State Government grant funding of $100,000 and a total Council contribution of $17,000 for construction plus a further $5000 per annum in maintenance.

The Dog and Cat Management Board guidelines show parks range in size from 17,000 square metres to 100 square metres.
