Wollongong City Council is beginning works to upgrade and refurbish the Bellambi rock pool and the northern seawall.

While work on rebuilding the ageing seawall is expected to take three months, weather permitting. During the investigation works for refurbishment of the sea wall, which is about 40 years old, Council uncovered small amounts of bonded asbestos in the seawall.

It is not uncommon to find material containing asbestos in ageing infrastructure during works in the city.

Council has engaged a qualified contractor who will remove the contaminated soil from the seawall site. These works will take place over the next four weeks.

During the removal the contractor will mitigate dust and a licensed asbestos removalist contractor will undertake the removal of the soil to ensure the asbestos removal is undertaken in a safe manner. A qualified environmental hygienist will also conduct air monitoring on the site and issue a clearance report on completion of the works.

Surrounding residents and the Surf Lifesaving Club have been notified of the works. In Wollongong there is a long history of the use of asbestos in building and other areas. If you see material that you believe could be asbestos in a public space, contact our Customer Service team on (02) 4227 7111 to report the material.
