Celebrate the legendary and heart-warming music of the Carpenters in We’ve Only Just Begun – The Music of The Carpenters, as part of Karralyka’s Toe Tapping Tuesday series.

The Carpenters were one of the most successful and cherished bands of all time, with a string of songs that captivated generations of fans the world over.

We’ve Only Just Begun – The Music of The Carpenters is written and performed by Australian music theatre star Angela Lumicisi, a self-proclaimed Carpenters fan.

It is a tribute to musical siblings Richard and Karen Carpenter, who Angela fell in love with at age 13 when she heard them playing on the loudspeaker in a Target store.

We’ve Only Just Begun is above all a personal story, which tells of the struggle of finding one’s identity and growing up in the confines of a traditional Italian family in Melbourne.

Karen Carpenter’s soaring and heart-rending vocals spoke to Angela in a way no one had before, creating a soundtrack to her own life.

“It’s like you’re singing to me and know what I’m going through, how is that?” says Angela.

Angela grew up in Brunswick East, in a typical Italian migrant family.

“In the 1970s, a good Italian girl goes to school, gets married and has kids,” she says in her show. “But what if she wants more?”

In this context, the tunes of The Carpenters become a beacon of hope in Angela’s life.

Karen and Angela’s lives intertwine though their weight struggles and their love of life. But ultimately it is through Karen’s untimely end that Angela finds the strength to be the person she’s always wanted to be. And as Karen’s life ends, Angela’s has only just begun…

Enjoy favourite hits as Top of the World, Close To You, Yesterday Once More, Sing, We’ve Only Just Begun and many more, as Angela Lumicisi channels Karen Carpenter’s unique, soft 70s musical style that made the Carpenters among the best-selling music artists of all time.
