The South West Regional Waste Group (SWRWG) remains firmly committed to advancing waste management across the region.
The group has commissioned a market sounding exercise aimed at identifying viable new technologies and best practice approaches to reducing the volume of waste to landfill.
Established in 2015, the SWRWG comprises 13 South West Local Government Councils including the City of Busselton. A Project Officer for the working group has recently been appointed and is based at the City of Busselton.
Foremost on the Group’s agenda is an investigation into ways to maximise waste recovery which also take advantage of economies of scale and minimise the burden on regional ratepayers.
City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said that waste management is a rapidly changing industry and one in which the community is heavily invested.
“The SWRWG is charged with exploring all options inducing new and emerging commercial opportunities. Our investigations will be informed by State policy but during this exploratory phase, they won’t be bound by this policy. We want to get a full picture of all the different types of waste produced both now and into the future so we can make informed decisions about effective and efficient management.”
The working group will report back regularly to participating Council bodies on the progress of this research. It’s important to note that no new sites are being considered for potential development as part of this research project. However, existing waste management locations that are already operational and licenced may be investigated. If you would like to provide input into this research exercise please contact Nick Edwards, SWRWG Project Officer [email protected]
