The third event in Liverpool City Council and Western Sydney University’s Ideas2170 series will explore tough questions about the health outcomes in South West Sydney such as lower life expectancy and a greater prevalence of preventable diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Six local health visionaries (listed below) will speak about their perspectives on the discrepancy between the health status of residents in South West Sydney and the burgeoning health and innovation precinct in Liverpool.

Dr Emma George, Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education at Western Sydney University;Maree Collins, Program Manager at Miller Pathways (‘2168’ Communities for Children; Liverpool Family Mental Health Support Service; STAR4KIDS);Associate Professor Paul Middleton at South Western Sydney Clinical School;Professor Les Bokey, Foundation Professor of Surgery and Clinical Dean, Western Sydney University at Liverpool Hospital;Dr Haider Mannan, Lecturer in Biostatistics at Centre for Health Research and the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University; andDr John Crozier, Vascular and trauma surgeon at Liverpool Hospital.

Liverpool City Council CEO Kiersten Fishburn will facilitate the discussion and members of the audience are invited to contribute during a Q&A session afterwards.

“There are many questions I look forward to asking our panellists. Among them will be how local stakeholders can better address enduring health challenges, particularly suburbs experiencing high levels of social disadvantage,” Ms Fishburn said.

“Life expectancy is lower in South West Sydney than in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and north shore.

“We need to find the solutions and this panel is a great way to kickstart the conversation.”
