A performance at Council's NAIDOC Week flag raising ceremony last year.The Campbelltown community will honour the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Australia’s First Peoples at NAIDOC Week celebrations in July.
A full day of events and activities will be held in Campbelltown to celebrate NAIDOC Week (7-14 July) to honour this year’s theme – Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.
“As part of our commitment to reconciliation, I encourage all residents and community groups, cultures and services to join our NAIDOC Week celebrations and actively pursue unity to create a stronger, brighter and more inclusive future for everyone in Campbelltown,’’ said Mayor George Brticevic.
“We value the cultural lessons and the knowledge of country that our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community takes the time to share with us,” Cr Brticevic said.
Celebrations start on Monday 8 July with a morning tea and flag raising ceremony on Council’s front lawn at 9.30am, followed by a street march at 10.40am to Bradbury Oval for a free Community Celebration Day from 11am to 3pm.
The Community Celebration Day will include:
Koori Oki – a singing competition in front of a live audience Free children’s activities Aboriginal art and an Aboriginal interactive display Free edible plant giveaways Live entertainment Free community barbecue provided by the Rotary Club of Campbelltown Market and information stalls Face painting.Council will also join forces with Campbelltown City Police Area Command and a range of other services to host the Campbelltown City NAIDOC Touch Football Competition at Benham Oval, Minto from 9.30am, Wednesday, 10 July.
Through sport, the competition is designed to break down barriers and strengthen relationships between police and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
