Join in the fun and lots of water play with free entry to the official opening of East Gippsland Shire Council’s Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre (BARC) redevelopment this Saturday, June 29 from 12pm.
Member for Eastern Victoria the Hon. Jane Garrett will represent the Victorian Government and officially open the $6.63 million redevelopment, followed by an afternoon of community celebration and activities with free pool entry from 1pm.
The project includes a warm water pool, interactive children’s water play area, an expanded aquatic area and upgraded all-accessible change facilities, and expanded reception and café areas.
As part of Saturday’s celebration there will be a free barbecue, membership promotions, prizes and giveaways, children’s games and activities, gym challenges and a free family movie (The Incredibles 2) in the stadium from 6pm.
Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell said the newly redeveloped aquatics area and water play features, spa and sauna and on-deck change areas, is a great community facility for the region which will be used for years to come.
“The new warm water pool is already being well utilised for therapy for people with arthritis, restricted circulation and muscle soreness. It’s being used by children, families and older residents from across East Gippsland with rave reviews,” Cr O’Connell said.
“Community members also have access to greater all-ability facilities at the aquatic centre, with a new full-care adult change room and accessible change rooms.
“The water play features are designed to cater for children from birth, with areas suitable for water familiarisation through to fun for older children, encouraging water confidence and development.”
Ahead of Saturday’s official opening, Council thanks contractor Brooker Builders and their subcontractors who worked tirelessly to complete the facility, and all BARC members, user groups and individuals for their patience during the construction of the project.
“Saturday’s official opening will be a fantastic celebration of what has been one of Council’s major capital works projects. I encourage everyone to visit the BARC and experience the new facilities for themselves.,” Cr O’Connell said.
Council contributed $3.62 million towards the project, with the Victorian Government providing $3 million from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and East Gippsland Water $10,000.
