Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country Policy Adopted
Shire of Harvey 26 Jun 2019

Ahead of NAIDOC week 2019 Council adopted its first Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country Policy which is identified in the Shire’s Reconciliation Action Plan, endorsed at Council’s April meeting.

Chief Executive Officer Annie Riordan said this policy strengthens the Council’s vision to achieve genuine reconciliation in the community through strong relationships, recognition of traditional landowners and celebration of our rich cultural diversity and history.

“The policy is a positive step in the right direction to provide support to staff and Council to acknowledge and deliver Welcome to Country or Acknowledgement of Country at events and official proceedings,” Ms Riordan said.

“We need to ensure that the appropriate protocols for the recognition of Noongar people as traditional owners and custodians of country are observed and this policy will aim to ensure that happens.”

Ms Riordan said the Aboriginal flag would be flown on a permanent basis at the Shire administration offices in Harvey and Australind starting from NAIDOC week 2019.
