Men’s Health Week, which runs each year throughout June, is a national initiative that provides opportunities to address important issues regarding men’s health.
Backed each year by a specific theme, the campaign focuses on raising the profile of men and their health needs. In 2019 the theme was Men and Families. Keeping Boys and Men Healthy.
This year the City proudly hosted seven different activities for men of all ages. On Monday 10 June the City’s Men’s Health Week program began with a workshop which gave more than 20 local sporting clubs, community group representatives and volunteer involving organisations some helpful tips on how they can support fellow club members who may be experiencing mental health issues.
This workshop was followed by a Bloke’s Bootcamp at the Aqua Jetty on Tuesday 11 June. Men from the ages of 20 – 82 worked up a sweat to boost their health before capping off their efforts with a healthy meal.
A group of men then had the opportunity on Wednesday 12 June to transform their thinking about food during a nutrition workshop where they prepared healthy nachos, pizzas and burgers.
On Thursday 13 June more than 30 men from the ages of eight to 80 tried their hand in creating an artistic masterpiece during the Bloke’s Art Class event at the Drop Inn.
Following this a number of dads got the chance to enjoy an exciting robotics workshop with their children at the Mary Davies Library and Community Centre on Friday 14 June.
The City’s Men’s Health Week events finished with a 3D printing workshop at the Safety Bay Library on Saturday 15 June and a meeting of local fathers at the Coffee Club in Baldivis on Sunday 16 June to kick start a new support group for local dads.
Mayor Barry Sammels thanked all participants for making Men’s Health Week 2019 the biggest and best yet.
“The City was delighted to be able to host a wide range of activities that addressed all facets of men’s health, with men of all ages and backgrounds participating,” Mayor Sammels said.
“It is well known that many men often experience difficulty in addressing issues surrounding their physical and mental health, so it was fantastic to see such a great turnout from men across the community at the City’s Men’s Health Week events.
“I sincerely hope these activities have inspired men across Rockingham to proactively ensure they are doing the absolute best they can to look after their health.”
