Danger on Old Bathurst Road

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill will take a Mayoral Minute to the next meeting of Council following continued calls from residents about the dangers posed by large trucks that use Old Bathurst Road, Blaxland

Mayor Greenhill said residents were particularly concerned about the danger at the bends between the Penrith and Blue Mountains Local Government Areas, contrary to current signage.

“Locals know how frightening it can be when you are coming around one of those tight bends between Emu Plains and Blaxland and you are confronted by a large truck on the wrong side of the road trying to swing wide enough to get around the turn.

“It is a fatality waiting to happen. It is just madness!

“I am calling for the Roads and Maritime Service, as well as both Penrith and Blue Mountains Councils and local traffic committees, to look at this problem and come up with real solutions.

“We may need bigger, flashing signs. We may need signs that are placed further back from the bends so that there is more warning for drivers. Perhaps the signs that are there, are not clear enough.

“Together, we need to work for a better solution. If we don’t we will see some very tragic events on that road, of this I feel certain.

“Our emergency services are amazing but it would be by far the better policy outcome if we could prevent these things from happening in the first place,” Cr Greenhill said.
