Media statement - Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre (ARC)

Structural engineers finished their assessment of the indoor heated pool at the Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre (ARC) yesterday and have confirmed that the issue is not structural.

Their assessment has revealed that a number of the screws used during construction of the Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre’s (ARC) to fix the acoustic panels have come loose. To ensure the community’s safety and in order to comply with the engineer’s assessment, all of the screws will be replaced.

As a result, the indoor heated pool will be closed until further notice while Council works with the builder to remedy the situation.

Council is also in discussions with on-site managers, Belgravia, and is considering the option of re-opening the outdoor pool to the public earlier than September 2019. The on-site gym will remain open.

28/06/2019 – past update

Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre (ARC).

The issue has now been identified and work put in place to address the issue, with the priority to reopen the indoor heated pool at the Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre (ARC).

Structural engineers were on site Thursday 27 June to assess the internal ceiling around the indoor heated pool area and have confirmed an issue regarding the acoustic panels and the stripping material which border each panel. The issue is not structural.

Council staff will be on site today (Friday 28 June) and over the weekend removing some of the stripping. However, some work will require specific equipment, which may delay the reopening until early next week.

27/06/2019 – past update

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the internal heated pool at the Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre (ARC) will be closed today (Thursday 27 June).

It has been identified that there may be an issue with the ceiling panels and an assessment needs to be undertaken to ensure the facility is safe for the community and no further issues exist. Council has engaged a structural engineer to investigate the issue and will be on site at the ARC this morning to assess the situation. A report will then be provided to council.

Council is working with Belgravia and will reopen the pool as soon as possible in the lead-up to the school holidays.”
