For the past 13 months, Council has been undertaking the construction of a new water treatment plant and other upgrades in Charters Towers as part of the Water Infrastructure Upgrade Project (WIUP).
The upgrade project, along with the other works, will cost a total of $21.55M, with co-funding from the Federal Government of $8.65M.
The project has been progressing well, even with the February wet weather setbacks. At this stage over 60% of the project has been completed.
Crews have been busy and I’m happy to report that:
All major structures have been constructed on the water treatment plant. Construction will soon commence on the Weir intake upgrade. The reservoir refurbishment works are completed, with only minor works remaining.Over the next few months, minor projects will be finalised, and commissioning of the plant will commence. All remaining work is expected to be completed by November of this year.
When completed the new clarifier and new gravity filters will have a 60+ year life and all the upgrades will increase water production capacity to 22 ML per day.
We will continue to update the community as the work progresses. It’s Council’s priority to ensure the impact on the community both financially and through water restrictions during construction are kept to a minimum.
