Town encourages Showground discussion

Town of Claremont Mayor and Councillors welcome future discussion regarding the Claremont Showgrounds.

Following a request from the West Australian Planning Commission (WAPC), the Town advertised the Draft Management Plan for local comment in January 2019. The Draft Management Plan and the public submissions received were presented to the Council on Tuesday at its Ordinary Council Meeting.

Based on the submissions received, the Town will convey the following concerns to WAPC, who will be deciding on the future use of the Claremont Showgrounds site.

Continued use of the showgrounds by RASWA Lack of detail in the Management Plan Extent of proposed uses for the site Incidental and support uses of the site WAPC Exemption for Development Parking and Traffic impact Proposed building heights Urban Design and Amenity Transit Oriented (re) Development Mayor Jock Barker has said, “We welcome a discussion around what opportunities there are for RAS to take a second look at what contemporary farming is, and how it can be presented to the metropolitan area. As a large portion of the Claremont Showground is a significant state-owned asset, it is only reasonable that the local and wider Perth community should have a say in its future use.”

“The showground site represents an opportunity to create a space that will be a relevant and evolving part of the WA community. We recognise the historical importance of the Royal Show event, however, we do need to give consideration as to how this large community space can fill its potential year-round and not only for the 10 days of the year when the Show is in town.”

The Town is seeking the opportunity to work with RASWA and other relevant authorities to ensure the site, and therefore the Royal Show, is of long-term benefit to our local and the wider Western Australian community.   Back To News Stories
