First introduced by the City in October 2017, the Tertiary Scholarship Scheme supports students who have an offer from a tertiary institution or are currently enrolled to complete an undergraduate university degree or TAFE/VET diploma for the first time.
Rather than funding course fees directly, the scheme supports students’ living expenses and assists them in attending tertiary institutions.
The scheme was borne out of feedback the City received during consultation for its Children and Young People Strategy 2018 – 2023, which identified that the costs and complexities of residents’ living situations often created barriers that stopped people from attaining tertiary qualifications.
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged eligible students to apply in round two of the scheme.
“The City’s Tertiary Scholarship Scheme is a program that helps students overcome some of the issues they face when attending tertiary institutions including book fees, transport costs and general living expenses,” Mayor Sammels said.
“It has proven to be very popular among students in the City, with 42 scholarships awarded to students since it began nearly two years ago.
“I encourage all eligible students living within the City of Rockingham to apply before the deadline later this month.”
Applications for round two of the Tertiary Scholarship Scheme are open until Friday 19 July 2019.
