New sports floodlighting will be installed at four parks in the City of Wanneroo’s southern suburbs, as part of the City’s 2019/20 Capital Works Program.

The new lighting will be installed at Hainsworth Park and Ferrara Park in Girrawheen, Paloma Park in Marangaroo and Koondoola Park in Koondoola with a total investment of $558,000.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the new floodlighting would allow local sporting clubs to use the facilities for longer throughout the year.

“This project ties in with our long-term vision of creating a vibrant, progressive City that provides an abundance of opportunities for enhancing the health and wellbeing of our residents and enabling our growing communities to prosper,” Mayor Roberts said.

“Improvements to our existing parks and sports facilities, such as these new floodlights, comprise a large portion of the City’s 2019/20 Capital Works Program.”

Kingsway Junior Football Club Vice President Ryan Santich said the new floodlighting at Paloma Park would be beneficial to their club, as a lot of its teams were unable to train early in the afternoon due to the coaches’ work commitments.

“The installation of floodlights at Paloma Park will greatly assist our club as we are currently trying to squeeze 18 teams onto two ovals for midweek training,” Ryan said.

“A third oval with lights will enable teams to have more space and flexibility, and as Paloma Park is in close proximity to a lot of our members, it can easily accommodate some of our teams.”

Similarly, Van Cung Ling from the Chinese Migrant Centre of WA plays soccer at Hainsworth Park each Saturday, but said he was unable to train there during weekdays because of the current lack of lighting.

“When the new floodlighting is installed at Hainsworth Park it will be a good thing for us – it means our players will be able to train at the park during weekday evenings,” Van said.

The State Government is contributing $146,000 via the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
