Council is encouraging Sunraysia residents to join us in taking part in the Plastic Free July Challenge.
Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be ‘part of the solution to plastic pollution’, helping us achieve cleaner streets, water ways and communities.
Council is participating in the global challenge for the second year, which will involve staff avoiding the use of single-use plastic on Monday, 22 July.
The day of action is among a broader push throughout this month to raise awareness and do our part to reduce plastic pollution.
Councillor for Environment and Farming Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said residents can also register their own event on the Plastic Free July website at www.plasticfreejuly.org/take-the-challenge.
“While taking part in Plastic Free July will help reduce plastic consumption throughout the month, it will also hopefully see residents and groups in our community pick up new habits or routines that will see them permanently reduce single-use plastic,” Cr Cirillo said.
“You can take this challenge into your school, business or organisation for a day, a week or the whole month.
“Participating in the program could mean changing little things you do every day, such as bringing your own reusable shopping bags or drinking from reusable coffee cups.”
“The end goal is increasing recycling rates and reducing waste going to landfill.”
