Cardinia Shire is celebrating NAIDOC Week at a number of local events from 7–14 July 2019, recognising the contributions and value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the community.
NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Graeme Moore said NAIDOC Week is a wonderful opportunity to learn about, connect with and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“This year’s theme is ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s Work Together’ and Council is committed to doing just that. I would encourage everyone to attend a local NAIDOC Week event to learn more and get involved”, Cr Moore said.
Cardinia Shire Council has also updated its Reconciliation Action Plan, which will be available for community feedback from Thursday 11 July to Friday 23 August 2019.
“Our second Reconciliation Action Plan aims to strengthen relationships, partnerships, local opportunities and I welcome our community reviewing the draft plan and providing input to strengthen this,” Cr Moore said.
Local NAIDOC Week events Wednesday 10 July, 10am–2pmNAIDOC Koolin-ik ba Kirrip-buluk (Family and Friends), hosted by Casey Cardinia Libraries and Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, will be held at Australian Garden, Royal Botanic Gardens, Cranbourne.
Come along to enjoy music by singer-songwriters Kutcha Edwards and Kee’ahn, a performance by Djirri Djirri Dance Group, Indigenous language plant naming, mindfulness workshops, storytelling, Aboriginal knowledge tours, damper making, Indigenous games, and a history of Treaty.
Thursday 11 July, 2–3pmA children’s event at the Pakenham Library will feature a book reading of Wilam – A Birrarung Story, followed by an arts activity.
Thursday 11 July, 6–8pm‘Let’s Talk Reconciliation’ at Pakenham Library is an opportunity for people to come together, join a conversation, view the draft Reconciliation Action Plan, and begin sharing ideas. This special evening will include food, discussion, and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements.
