(10/7/2019) Fremantle Park Sports and Community Centre taking shape

The major new sports and community centre at Fremantle Park is starting to take shape, with work about to begin on the first floor.

Since construction began in April all in-ground services have been completed, along with the ground floor slab and footings, steel work and ground floor blockwork.

City of Fremantle Director of Infrastructure and Project Delivery Graham Tattersall said the concrete slab for the first floor would be poured later this week.

“The build has been going really well so far, in spite of the wet weather we’ve had over the past few weeks,” Mr Tattersall said.

“Once the first floor slab is in place we expect the structural steel for the first floor, including the roof, to start going up by late July.

“That will give us a really good appreciation of the size and scale of the building and what it will look like when completed.”

The Fremantle Park Sports and Community Centre is being built by McCorkell Constructions and will be the new home for the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club, Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club and Fremantle Bowling Club.

The project includes the demolition of the existing tennis club and bowling club buildings, construction of the new centre, the installation of two new hardcourt tennis courts and a new synthetic bowling green.

The bowling club building is due to be vacated later this month in preparation for demolition in early August, with the club operating out of the tennis clubhouse in the interim.

The approved budget for the project is $4.1 million, with $1.85 million coming from the City of Fremantle, $1.85 million from the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club and $400,000 from the state government’s Community Sport and Recreation Facility Fund.

The City of Fremantle will progress to build a new public car park on the Parry Street side of the facility once the building works are complete.
