Eurobodalla Shire Council kick off its annual household hard waste collection this month, giving residents the chance to get rid of unwanted items that are too bulky for the household bin.

The kerbside collection gets underway at Tilba and South Narooma on Monday 18 July, then moves north across the rest of the shire, finishing at Surfside and Long Beach in the first week of September.

Waste minimisation officer Belinda Wagner explained that Council provides the service to households receiving the domestic waste collection to help residents get rid of bulky items like fridges, microwaves, rolls of carpet, garden tools, and furniture.

"This year, three separate collection vehicles will visit each street," she said. "One truck will collect metal to be taken to the waste management facilities for recycling. Another will collect all other items except fridges, freezers and air conditioning, which will be collected by the third truck. These are collected separately so they can be degassed before recycling."

Ms Wagner said residents can help by separating furniture and junk from any metal items on the kerb.

“We also love it when people put their waste out just before their area’s collection date rather than weeks in advance. It keeps everyone safe and our neighbourhoods looking better,” she said.

Junk that won’t be collected includes televisions and computer products like monitors and printers. These can be taken to Council’s waste management facilities free of charge all year round.

Other bulky items like mattresses, tyres, motor vehicle parts and vegetation, as well as building materials won’t be collected and should be taken to a waste facility.

Chemicals and hazardous material will not be collected either, but residents can get rid of things like paint, petrol and oil at Council’s household chemical clean out collections in October.
