Local government elections are only a few months away and Eurobodalla’s residents go to the polls on 10 September to elect eight councillors and a mayor who will represent them for a four-year term.
To help potential candidates gain a better understanding of what’s involved in being a councillor, Eurobodalla Shire Council will host an information evening on Monday 11 July at the Council Chambers in Moruya.
Councillors from other shires and representatives from the Australian Local Government Women’s Association will be sharing their personal stories and answering questions about life as a councillor.
Clr Danielle Brice came up with the idea to hold the information session, saying it’s about trying to inspire and inform people from diverse backgrounds about representing their community in local government.
“I’d like to see young people, people with disabilities, seniors, Indigenous people and people from diverse backgrounds put up their hand and make a difference in their community. I’d also like to see a more representative gender balance, because only six women have been elected to Eurobodalla Council since 1984, and three of these are in the current term,” said Cr Brice.
Mayor Lindsay Brown is also encouraging people to attend the information session.
“Serving my community is without a doubt the most rewarding and hardest job I have ever done. Having the opportunity to champion projects that make Eurobodalla a better place to live and working with interesting and passionate members of our community is incredibly satisfying. It’s hard work, and you need to be resilient and dedicated, but the rewards of serving and representing your community are enormous.”
The information evening for potential candidates will be held on Monday 11 July from 5pm to 6.30pm at the Council Chambers in Vulcan Street Moruya. Light refreshments will be available until 7pm.
Council is asking people to RSVP for catering purposes by phoning Lauren Evans on 4474 1022, or email [email protected] by midday on 11 July.
