Mayor Lindsay Brown says he is absolutely delighted with today’s Coalition re-election commitment of $2.5 million to expand Moruya Airport.

Senator Fiona Nash flew in this morning to join Member for Eden Monaro Peter Hendy and Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis to pledge the funding for Eurobodalla Shire Council.

Mayor Lindsay Brown says the funds would be matched by Council and used to open up 14.7 hectares of employment land at Moruya Airport by connecting water, sewer and electricity to the area and expanding the commercial space available.

“This announcement shows that Anne and Peter are fully supportive of our long held vision for Moruya Airport and this Council’s commitment to strategically growing Eurobodalla’s economy and creating jobs. This is just the trigger we need,” the Mayor said. “Investment like this changes communities.”

Senator Nash congratulated the Mayor for “pitching hard and knocking on doors”, adding that the funding commitment says Eurobodalla is a community worth investing in.

Council’s Business Development Manager Andrew Greenway said existing businesses are ready to move into the new premises as soon as they are available.

“This is why Council applied for funding under Round 3 of the National Stronger Regions Fund for this development. Our Expression of Interest last year for the first release of new land was fully subscribed with businesses ready and willing to move into the new commercial spaces planned for the airport precinct. This funding commitment is particularly exciting for them, too, and promises over 40 new jobs for the region once we get underway.”

Council has also applied for NSW Government funding of $4.6 million for tourism accommodation and the necessary terminal and runway upgrades to allow future passenger growth at the airport.

Clr Brown said he is most grateful for the solid support Ms Sudmalis and Dr Hendy, as well as State Member for Bega Andrew Constance, who has added his backing to Council’s funding applications.
