Tuross Head’s iconic One Tree Point headland is getting a makeover and Eurobodalla Council staff met with local community groups last week to go over the plans.
A new timber viewing platform will be built around the Norfolk Island pine that gives the headland its name. The platform overlooks the ocean and the popular whale and dolphin watching spot will have a new ramp to improve access, four timber seats, and a small garden to complement the famed pine tree. Council is seeking quotes from local builders for this part of the work.
The existing rockwall near the lower carpark area will be reconstructed and strengthened to prevent erosion of the car park. The new wall will be about 40 metres long, sloping down from car park level to the existing rock beach. Council will re-use the existing rock and concrete from the old ramp and has sourced additional large boulders locally. After talking to the local boardriders club, an access to the water will be provided using flat boulders to create informal steps.
Back near the barbeque area, a larger shelter structure with a new table and seats will be built to make it easier for groups using the barbeque, while the two remaining picnic facilities will be replaced. The removal of vegetation around the barbeque will provide more usable space as well as opening up the views down the coastline. Council crews will also put the finishing touches to the top of the beach access stairs, as well as adding kerb and gutter to the car park and removing some of the outdated pine fencing.
Work on the rockwall starts on Tuesday 26 April. The lower car park will be closed during the project and areas under construction will be cordoned off as each element of the work moves along.
Council expects the project to be completed by the end of June 2016, with the timing of the viewing platform subject to suitable quotes being received.
