Member for Bega Andrew Constance has announced the second stage of work on the South Batemans Bay Link Road is underway at the Glenella Road end of the project.
Mr Constance said the new road will link George Bass Drive with the Princes Highway.
“The NSW Government allocated $10 million for the project to improve traffic flow and support future growth in the region.
“The new Link Road will be a two lane road with wide sealed shoulders enabling room for a future climbing lane on the uphill section for westbound traffic.
“Eurobodalla Shire Council has completed the first section of the road between George Bass Drive and Curtis Road.
“Work is now under way on the second stage of the project to complete the remaining 2.2 kilometres from Curtis Road to the Princes Highway.
“This stage is expected to take about two years to complete and includes a new roundabout at the intersection of George Bass Drive and a Heron Road extension to the Link Road.
“The Link Road will provide an alternative route for traffic to bypass the Batemans Bay CBD and reduce the number of heavy vehicles on Beach Road.
“The road will also support future housing and jobs growth in the area and reduce travel times for motorists, freight and emergency vehicles, providing direct access to the Princes Highway for the Batemans Bay Ambulance Station.”
Eurobodalla Mayor Lindsay Brown said construction of the Link Road would not be possible without the Member for Bega’s support. “I congratulate Andrew and his government for understanding the importance of this road to the Eurobodalla community and for providing funding for the vital second stage.
“Council’s work crews are ready to get going on the project and will start work on the road in March, aiming to finish stage two by July 2018.”
Mr Constance said Roads and Maritime will continue to work with Eurobodalla Shire Council to plan for stage three of the project, which involves a safe and efficient intersection between the Link Road and the Princes Highway.
“A Preliminary Environmental Investigation has been carried out to help inform the design of the intersection,” he said.
