If healthy eating and improved fitness are your goals for this year, a free fitness challenge starting next month in Eurobodalla could be just the motivation you need.
Eurobodalla has been selected as one of five regions in rural New South Wales to compete in the Healthy Town Challenge and organisers want as many residents as possible to sign up for the 24-week contest.
The competition starts from 1 February and offers participants aged 18 years and over free telephone-based health coaching with the NSW Government’s Get Healthy program and free outdoor group fitness classes with qualified local trainers twice per week in Batemans Bay, Narooma and Moruya.
Healthy eating workshops and other health-related deals will be on offer as part of the challenge. Participants also have the opportunity to suggest fitness and nutrition activities they’d like included in the challenge when they sign up.
Eurobodalla Council and Southern NSW Local Health District are partners in bringing the challenge to Eurobodalla and Mayor Lindsay Brown is urging residents to get behind the competition, dubbed the ‘Euro Enduro’.
‘There’s a prize of $5000 up for grabs for the town that collectively achieves the most participation numbers and change in total weight,’ he said. ‘But more important than town glory is the opportunity for individuals to take small steps to improve their health for free in a supportive and fun environment.’
‘The more people who sign up for the free Get Healthy telephone-based health coaching service the better our chances of winning the challenge,’ Clr Brown said. ‘Get Healthy staff will help participants with goal setting, maintaining motivation, overcoming barriers and making sustainable lifestyle changes in a weekly phone call. It’s a great opportunity to make positive steps for a healthier future,’ he said.
Eurobodalla’s competitors in the 2016 Healthy Town Challenge are Coolamon, Cowra, Sanctuary Point and Warren.
If you would like to join the Euro Enduro, need more information, or have suggestions for activities to include in the town challenge, please call Council’s Soozie Gillies on 02 4474 7442.
