Help to preserve our planet and plant a tree in Livingstone this National Tree Day

Livingstone Shire Council is inviting residents to make their way to Kemp Beach on Sunday 28 July to get their hands dirty by taking part in Planet Ark’s National Tree Day, sponsored by Ian Weigh Toyota.
Starting in 1996, this campaign is now Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature protection event.
Planet Ark is asking all individuals to take part this year and contribute to our future environment by participating in the plan to plant one million new native trees and shrubs across the country.
Parks, Open Spaces and Environment Councillor Tom Wyatt said National Tree Day is a long running partnership between Council and Ian Weigh Toyota and it is a productive way to spend the day; giving back to our broader community, enjoying the sun and fresh air whilst doing something good for our environment.
“The planting which took place at Hartley Street in Emu Park last year is looking fantastic so we’d love to see more people getting involved this year to plant as many trees as possible along our fragile coastline,” Cr Wyatt said.
“It is proven through various research projects and feedback that community members benefit greatly from planting and maintaining their local green spaces, helping them to feel happier, healthier and more connected to their communities.”
Community Development Councillor Jan Kelly said it was always heartening to see our local schools also getting involved with the planting day on Friday 26 July.
“This encourages our future generations to take care and preserve our planet while raising awareness on the importance of our diverse local environments, which cover vast landscapes of bushland, coastline and rainforests,” Cr Kelly said.
“The event is also an opportunity for Livingstone Shire Council and Ian Weigh Toyota to showcase their commitment to carbon reduction and encouraging a sustainable future.”
Planet Ark Deputy CEO Rebecca Gilling said this year’s Tree Day would provide an opportunity for Australian Landcare, community and faith groups to get together and make a lasting impact in their communities.
“As always, we want to thank the councils, Landcare groups and everyday Australians whose contributions keep Australia’s natural environment flourishing,” Ms Gilling said.
This year’s National Tree Day event is taking place at Kemp Beach, Scenic Highway on Sunday 28 July with activities starting at 9am – 12pm.
Participants are advised to bring gloves, wear covered footwear and be sun safe by remembering sunscreen, hats and suitable clothes. A sausage sizzle and drinks will also be provided for participants.
