Council’s Draft Public Toilet Strategy has been completed and is now on public exhibition.
The strategy aims to improve the quality and standard of the 80 public toilets across our large municipality, taking in central Mildura as well as outlying towns including Murrayville, Werrimull and Ouyen.
It’s the result of a comprehensive public consultation and audit process that sought the community’s views and examined existing facilities according to accessibility, design, safety, hygiene and maintenance.
Councillor for Infrastructure and Transport Greg Brown thanked the community for its input into the strategy, with well over 600 residents taking part in surveys and the numerous sectors of the community that participated in a series of workshops and other activities.
“While they’re not often the most popular or talked-about public amenity, public toilets are a critical community asset that not only contribute to the health and wellbeing of residents, but the accessibility and vitality of our public places and spaces.”
The draft strategy is based around four overarching themes: network distribution, design, accessibility and management.
It sets out Council’s vision and objectives for public toilets in our region and provides key findings and recommendations in the following areas:
location (distribution) design accessibility safety and security maintenance cleanliness and heath.Residents are now encouraged to view the strategy and provide their feedback, which will be used to develop the final Public Toilet Strategy.
Once the final strategy is endorsed, it will guide the development of an Implementation Plan, which will include a list of proposed upgrades and refurbishments to public toilets over the coming 10 years, which will be reviewed at the five-year mark.
A ‘public toilet toolkit’ will also be developed, which will provide a framework to help Council determine future upgrades.
The Draft Public Toilet Strategy can be viewed on Council’s website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay. Hard copies are also available at Council Service Centres.
Written feedback should be addressed to Chief Executive Officer, Mildura Rural City Council. PO Box 105 Mildura Victoria 3502. Feedback can also be emailed to [email protected].
Feedback must be received by 5pm on Thursday 15 August this year.
