Former Fairfield City Mayor Clr Anwar Khoshaba OAM has passed away at 78 years of age.

He leaves behind his wife Athour and three adult children Ninos, Rhonda and Frank.

Anwar served on Fairfield City Council from 1991 to 2004 and from 2008 to 2012, when he retired.

Anwar was Mayor on three occasions, 1997-1998, 1999-2000 and 2001-2002.

He was the first elected Australian Assyrian Mayor in Australia and he was also elected Deputy Mayor on three occasions. In 2002 he was awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to the Assyrian community and local government.

He was also awarded the honour of Emeritus Mayor by the then Local Government Association of NSW (now Local Government NSW), in recognition of his service.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone expressed his sadness at the former Mayor’s passing.

“Our deepest sympathies go to Anwar’s wife and children, including current serving Councillor Ninos Khoshaba."

“Anwar’s contribution to Fairfield City will be remembered for years to come. He was passionate about making a difference for many of the community groups, local clubs, sporting groups, and church groups in the area. He is well known for dedicating his time to helping locals and he is very well respected in the local, national and international Assyrian community,” Mayor Carbone said.

“I pay his wife and family my deepest respects and condolences on this sad occasion.”
