Canterbury-Bankstown NAIDOC Celebrations

Throughout July 2019

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The celebrations are a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Canterbury Bankstown will be hosting several events in throughout the month of July in partnership with local community organisations. All welcome.

This FREE event will include a smoking ceremony, traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural show and Australian wildlife show, art activities and a barbeque lunch.

Come along for a FREE day of celebrations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, including music, performances, art workshops and a barbeque lunch.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander film screenings When: Thursday 4 JulyTime: 10am-11.30amWhere: Riverwood Community Hub 80 Kentucky Road, Riverwood, Cnr Washington Avenue

Come to a FREE screening of Liyarn Ngarn, a story of Patrick Dodson’s 30-year mission to bring about a true and lasting reconciliation between Australia’s original owners and all immigrants. It is also a tragic story of Louis St John, an Aboriginal youth, and starring Archie Roach, an Aboriginal musician and member of Stolen Generation.

Cooks River Story Project Photographic Exhibition When: 1-14 JulyTime: During Library opening hoursWhere: Campsie Library and Knowledge Centre, 14-28 Amy Street, Campsie

This stunning exhibition by Asher Milgate pairs natural soundscapes of the Cooks River with photographic portraits and oral histories of Aboriginal people, with a lived experience and connection to the River. It is a commissioned work funded by the Australian Government through the Cooks River Alliance.

Bangali: Adorned, beautified and treasured objects of cultural illumination Kerri Kenton When: June-JulyWhere: Bankstown Arts Centre, Incubate Gallery 5 Olympic Pde, Bankstown

Kerri Kenton is a local Darug artist working in weaving, painting and design, who also produces works on paper. Her works are inspired by her indigenous heritage and the environment.
