What could make our vibrant beachside village centre at Avalon, with its tree lined streets, terraces shops and a close-knit community better? Well, many Avalon locals say improving the intersection of Old Barrenjoey Road and Avalon Parade would.
Council is staging a pop-up plaza this Saturday 27 July to give locals an opportunity to view the options that are being considered to improve accessibility and safety in the area, and to help them experience a new way to enjoy Avalon.
Locals can come down between 8.30am - 1.30pm to the area between Avalon Parade and Avalon Recreation Centre crossing along Old Barrenjoey Rd. The pop up will include: • Information about the options to improve the intersection • Live music from local musicians • Plant giveaways • Tips on living sustainably and reducing waste A partial road closure will be temporarily in place during the event from 6am to 4pm on Saturday 27 July. The My Place: Avalon ‘Spotlight on Avalon 2019’ and other studies spanning 25 years capture the community’s concern with the safety and accessibility aspects of the intersection.
Developed in consultation with the Avalon Community Reference Group, options include:
Minimal change - moving the pedestrian crossing away from the intersection and aligning it with pedestrian kerb rampsShared zone - creating a shared zone at Old Barrenjoey Road NorthOne way - moving the pedestrian crossing away from the intersection, aligning it with pedestrian kerb ramps, narrowing Old Barrenjoey Road (North) by incorporating blisters around the intersection and introducing a one-way directional concept.Earlier options including a roundabout and signalised lights did not meet Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) requirements and other technical specifications.

The Avalon Preservation Association has also developed a design for the area that will be on display at the pop-up event.
