Feedback sought on future of a bus shelter at Ellalong

Cessnock City Council is inviting residents to provide feedback in relation to the re-establishment of a bus shelter in Helena Street, Ellalong.
The bus shelter was damaged when a motor vehicle collided with the structure in 2017. Following the incident, Council officers conducted an investigation into reinstating the shelter. Upon further examination, it was discovered the existing site needed a number of improvements to be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT). The cost to erect a DSAPT compliant structure is estimated to cost $46,200.
Alternatively, Council could allow the length of Helena Street to operate as an informal bus stop, which is known as a hail-and-ride bus stop. Rather than being restricted to a single site, hail-and-ride services generally pick-up and set-down passengers closer to their requested location, subject to safety considerations.
The bus operator has confirmed the Helena Street bus stop has a very low utilisation rate. There is a bus stop on nearby Rugby street, with a shelter that is well utilised. Council is currently constructing concrete footpaths, kerb extensions and pram ramps adjacent the Rugby Street bus zone and shortly, this bus zone and shelter will undergo upgrades that include improvements to ensure compliance with DSAPT.
An alternative option is that Council investigate the installation of a new DSAPT compliant bus shelter in on Sanctuary Road, just west of Truro Street.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent encouraged residents to have their say.
“It’s important we hear from residents on this matter. We have a number of options available and are interested in the feedback of residents ahead of making a decisions about the future of the shelter.”
