Let’s celebrate Local Government Week

Local Government Week is fast approaching and it’s a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate the services Cessnock City Council provides to our community.

Running from 29 July to 4 August, Local Government Week aims to increase the community understanding of Council’s roles and responsibilities.

This year’s theme is “Your Council” and Council is excited to share a program of events for the community to enjoy and celebrate everything local government.

The much loved and anticipated School Leaders’ Breakfast is on again this year. This is where over 200 students come along and hear from an inspiring person. This year’s special guest speaker, Damian Thomlinson will present to students. He’ll be talking about his powerful story of strength, survival and life after the military. Damian starred in Hacksaw Ridge in 2016. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards. Thomlinson was also a member of the Australian team for the 2014 and 2016 Invictus Games.

Our libraries are also getting involved with both Cessnock and Kurri Kurri libraries holding many events including Rhymetime, Storytime and Tech help. More information on these events is available at libraries.cessnock.nsw.gov.au.   Some exciting additions to our celebrations this year include a FREE e-SAFETY presentation on Thursday 1 August at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 9:30am to 11am and a panel with Council’s Finance Team about all things rates and finance. For residents wanting to find out more about the Cessnock Waste Management Centre, a behind the scenes tour will be offered at 10am Monday 29 July and 2:30pm Tuesday 30 July.  To book your spot visit  https://www.trybooking.com/BDZXN.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said this week is about moving the conversation from roads, rates and rubbish.

“This week is about highlighting all we have to offer to our community. It’s about promoting all the services we manage and the role we play in making this a wonderful place to call home.”
