Timboon gym closed for maintenance

The Timboon Sporting Centre gym will remain closed in the short term after routine maintenance found material suspected of containing asbestos.

Acting Manager Facilities and Recreation Jane Hinds said work to replace the floor coverings revealed old vinyl floor tiles which potentially contain the hazardous material.

A registered asbestos removalist assessed the situation this week and found only a small area of concern.

“Because the tiles were covered by carpet and rubber matting, there has been no risk of users being exposed to hazardous material,” Ms Hinds said.

“We had the gym closed this week with intentions to reopen Monday.

“Now, rather than just replacing the matting, we’ll remove all the carpet and vinyl in the whole gym area and replace it with thicker matting on the concrete floor.

“The gym will need to remain closed, but we anticipate re-opening on 1 August.

“We have informed affected users by phone and advised the school and the one commercial operator who uses the space.”

The rest of the stadium will continue to operate as usual.
