Artists sought to create tourism landmark in Lismore

Lismore is about to join the inner-city Brunswick and Rupanyup in the Wimmera when it is beautified by a massive public art mural.

Corangamite Shire Council has called for expressions of interest from artists to turn the Lismore water tower into a tourist attraction.

North Ward Councillor Lesley Brown said consultation with the community had identified some themes that would reflect the town’s history and character.

“The artwork should sum up our heritage and contemporary identity and remain a timeless legacy for the community,” Cr Brown said.

“Community members have named the things that are important to their sense of self, including agricultural themes such as sheep, shearing & woolsheds, and the wonderful natural environment of the Volcanic Lakes and Plains region, including native animals, birds and vegetation.”

Council has advertised for artists to send in a one-page CV detailing examples of their works and their experience of large-scale murals.

Cr Brown said a Community Reference Group, assisted by Regional Arts Victoria representative Jo Grant, would assess submissions and short-list three artists to develop and propose their concepts.

“The silo art trail in the Wimmera and Mallee regions has shown that these murals can really reinvigorate communities.

“They reinforce residents’ sense of pride in their home, and provide a new reason for visitors to come and explore.”

Expressions of Interest are due by 5 pm, Thursday 15 August 2019.

The project is expected to be finished by March 2020.
