Gannawarra Shire Council will purchase the former Koondrook Hall site, enacting on a request from the Koondrook community.
Council approved the purchase of the land for the nominal sum of $1 at the July Ordinary Council Meeting following a request from the Koondrook Hall Committee and the Koondrook Development Committee.
“The Koondrook Memorial Hall was demolished in 2017 due to significant movement in the foundations and was falling into disrepair,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.
“The hall was a major feature of the Koondrook Wharf precinct and added character to the area.”
Council received correspondence from the Koondrook Hall Committee in May 2019, offering to “gift” Council the land, with the committee suggesting the site could be used as a playground area for the town and district.
“All members of our community should have access to the social and health benefits of participating in recreation, and improving opportunities for participation is a priority for Council,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“Council looks forward to working with the Koondrook community in the future to help design what will become a major community asset for the town.”
