New flood gauge system installed

Queensland’s recent flood event shows the importance of being prepared for any disaster.
To help the region be prepared for future flood events, Council has installed a new rain and river gauge system, near the Burdekin River bridge (at Starbright Station) on the Hervey Range Developmental Road.
The new rain and river gauge system was proudly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the 2018/2019 Natural Disaster Resilience Program, with Council also contributing funds to the project
The gauge will provide up-to-date information on water levels along the Burdekin River and will provide data for early detection of floods.
Local Disaster Coordinator and Council’s Chief Executive Officer Aaron Johansson said the new gauge will provide important information in the event of a disaster.
“Having up-to-date and correct information on river heights is vital for our Local Disaster Management Group and allows us to convey important information about flooding to the community.
“The gauge has been installed on the upper Burdekin River Catchment and we appreciate the Ross family for allowing us to install it within their property boundary.
“The information can be used to notify residents of road closures, if they need to move livestock or machinery, or in extreme cases evacuate their families.
“This new rain and river gauge system will help our region be more prepared for future flooding events.”
