Mayor Peter Hunt officially opened Berri’s Riverfront Wharf today showcasing the $1.5M project.

Berri’s Riverfront Wharf Open

Berri Barmera Council Mayor Peter Hunt officially opened Berri’s Riverfront Wharf on Wednesday 24th July 2019. The $1.5M wharf is a major upgrade for the Berri Riverfront and has increased mooring facilities and includes a 260m walkway along the river’s edge.

Mayor Hunt said the project, which received $600k of funding from the South Australian Boating Facilities Fund, has delivered a fit for purpose community asset that will be utilised by people of all walks of life for many years to come.

“The lack of adequate mooring facilities along the riverfront and the state of the riverbank, which had deteriorating wire gabion basket erosion protection, prompted Council to commit to investigate a long term solution for the area with the 260 metre Wharf the outcome of this.”

“Given that the Murray River is the lifeblood of our region, the Wharf brings users right to the River’s edge via the 260 metre walkway.”

“We know that recreational boating is an important part of our regions culture and is a major attraction for visitors, so increasing accessible points for watercraft, including larger vessels to safely moor, further increases Berri’s appeal.”

Berri Barmera Council’s Infrastructure Project and Technical Officer Kim Seekamp said “The Wharf structure contains over 2 km of steel sheet piles which were driven in using Scherer Contractors barge and excavator fitted with a specially pile driving attachment.”

“Working alongside a local Riverland company and seeing the progress of the project has been a pleasure, especially given the geographic difficulties presented at this site. It was great to see the residents coming down and taking an interest in the construction while the guys worked.”

“The low rear limestone block wall provides an excellent spot to sit and enjoy the river and is a great feature of the structure”.

“We are really excited for the next stage of the project to provide a lighting display for the Wharf, essentially using it as a canvas.”

Mayor Hunt said the quality of the finished project is a testament to staff and local contractors working together and is an asset for the Berri township.
