Parking laws important during busy season

The importance of parking laws in Chinatown is being emphasised as our busy tourist season continues.

Shire of Broome Director Development and Community, Andre Stuyt, says parking laws are enforced for reasons of safety, economic development and pedestrian movement so that everyone is able to find parking to visit Chinatown’s restaurants, cafes, galleries, stores, post office and more, and can get around without footpaths and thoroughfares being blocked by vehicles.

There are 1248 parking bays in Chinatown – 227 of these have a two-hour time limit, 897 are unrestricted and the remainder include ACROD, motorcycle and scooter, coach, caravan and RV, taxi and loading bays. No point in Chinatown is more than 150m from an untimed parking bay.

“The purpose of the two-hour limit is to make sure bays become available regularly so that both locals and tourists are able to find parking,” Mr Stuyt says.

“It’s in the best interests of the traders in Chinatown that their customers can park, and that bays are not taken up by staff and others who are there all day.”

Parking in ACROD bays requires a valid permit, and there are dedicated motorcycle and scooter bays with parking on footpaths or traffic islands not permitted.
