Shire to be showcased at Yagan Square 18 July 2019

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will be showcased on the 45-metre high digital tower at Yagan Square later this month as part of the annual #shoWcAse in Pixels project.
Formerly known as Banners on the Terrace, #shoWcAse in Pixels is a community art project run by the Western Australian Local Government Association where local governments choose a local student’s artwork to be displayed in Yagan Square.
Traditionally, physical banners of the artwork were displayed along St Georges Terrace and Adelaide Terrace, however, the new format means participants are no longer restricted to canvas.
This year, the Shire’s entry comes from Byford Secondary College, with the final artwork produced by Year 12 student Anesu Ticharwa and was designed as part of an extra-curricular collaboration between Anesu and a group of Year 7 students.
The Year 7 students worked with art teachers Angela Treasure and Michael Kimbar, as well as Anesu, every Monday during the school term to come up with individual designs that represented the heritage and history of the Shire.
Anesu said she then took the students’ ideas and produced a piece that tied them together.
“I’ve loved doing art for as long as I can remember and was excited to be able to produce the banner,” Anesu said.
“It was a collaborative effort. I had lots of poster designs (from the Year 7 students) which I combined to make the final design.”
She said the final piece highlighted the Shire’s natural beauty with the main focal points being the old State Brickworks and the Darling Scarp.
Shire President Michelle Rich presented Anesu with a certificate of appreciation and thanked the students and art teachers at Byford Secondary College at the school’s final Term 2 assembly on July 5.
“On behalf of the Shire, thank you to everyone at Byford Secondary College who was involved in this art project,” Cr Rich said.
“Anesu’s design is going to look amazing on the digital tower in Yagan Square and I encourage people to look out for the banners when they go on display.”
The banners will be displayed at Yagan Square from Monday, 29 July to Sunday, 18 August.
