New Town Plan for the region

Charters Towers Regional Council has adopted its new Regional Town Plan, which will commence on Monday 29 July 2019.

The Regional Town Plan replaces the former Aligned Planning Schemes for the Charters Towers City and Dalrymple Shire and will allow for greater development opportunities across the entire Charters Towers Region.

“As a Council we are extremely happy that we’ve been able to adopt our new Regional Town Plan. It’s been long overdue as it wasn’t addressed following the Council amalgamation in 2008,” Mayor Liz Schmidt said.

“It’s a very important regulatory document and provides a framework for planning and development. The Town Plan affects the whole region and allows for emerging industries which may not have been considered by the previous plans. This includes Renewable Energy Facilities and Nature Based Tourism.

“The new Regional Town Plan will foster economic development by significantly reducing Development Application triggers across all zones particularly the City Centre.

“It supports a greater range of land uses such as alternative business and tourism opportunities within the Rural Zone.”

The new Regional Town Plan has taken into account community feedback which was provided by businesses and residents during the consultation period earlier this year.

The Plan also takes into account State Interests such as biodiversity and natural hazards and has been approved by the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning.

“Council was very pleased to be approved and we have been congratulated by the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Department, Cameron Dick, for being the first local government in Queensland to adopt a Planning Scheme under the Tailored Process in the Planning Act.”
