2019-2029 Creative City Strategic Plan

​Canterbury-Bankstown is about to become a lot more creative following the development and approval of its first Creative City Strategic Plan (cultural plan).

The Plan is an important first step to a holistic and strategic approach in establishing creative spaces and programs.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the draft document had been developed over the past 12 months, with considerable input from more than 100 residents and community groups.

“State Government agencies, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Arts and Culture Reference Groups, and dozens of residents who attended workshops, have been involved,” he said.

“From this extensive engagement we’ve come up with key transformations, which inform the direction of where we the community wants to go over the next decade.”

The Priority Creative Transformations include:

Becoming Australia’s public art capital, guided by a new Public Art Strategic Plan;Establishing creative trails along regional recreation and transport corridors to promote active transport, creativity and Aboriginal heritage in Canterbury-Bankstown;Setting up Campsie Culture Block, a creative hub including recreation, work and education spaces for creative industries, as well as new and emerging practices;Investigating the feasibility and location of a new gallery and local history display in Bankstown, in collaboration with key external partners;Launching our new Signature Event that will be distinctly Canterbury-Bankstown;Delivering creative outcomes as part of any urban renewal, master planning process, or planning proposal;Preparing a Works Schedule to inform the funding of public art through developer contributions;Lobbying to attract funding for creative endeavours and cultural infrastructure;Investigating Aboriginal cultural heritage as part of any urban renewal, master planning processes, or planning proposal; andStrategically coordinating creativity and culture within Council, and connecting with external stakeholders on creative projects.

“It’s important the community continues to assist Council on this journey, so I encourage residents to provide their feedback on the draft Plan,” Mayor Asfour said.
