Employment opportunities

Hundreds of local jobs will be available to be applied for, when the Canterbury-Bankstown Jobs and Skills Expo is held on Tuesday 6 August, at Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre (9.30am-2.30pm).

Major employers represented will include:

Hoyts;McDonalds;Primo Smallgoods;Southwest and Norwest Recruitment;Bankstown Central shopping centre; andTravelodge.

Major exhibitors include:

Mission Australia;Australian Taxation Office;Disability Services Australia;Legal Aid NSW;Western Sydney University; andEvent sponsor, Service NSW.

Mayor Khal Asfour said up to 50 employers and training and education providers will be represented at the annual event.

“There will be a Jobs Board displaying hundreds of local positions, as well as interactive workshops on resume writing, interview skills and personal presentation,” he said.

“We’ve been hosting this event for years now because we found we couldn’t rely on the NSW and Federal Governments to do their job and drive employment creation.

“Our event is about linking local residents with local jobs.”

There are 118,449 fulltime local jobs, up 2.2 per cent from 2017, with the major employers being small to medium size businesses. The biggest employment sectors are:

Manufacturing (17 per cent - 16,545 jobs);Health care (12.5 per cent - 12,151 jobs);Food and beverage production and retailing (12.5 per cent - 14, 746 jobs); andConstruction (11.9 per cent - 11,595 jobs).

“We are seeing a change in the employment landscape in Canterbury-Bankstown, with the fastest growing sector being health care,” Mayor Asfour said.

“A total of 3,503 new jobs have been created in the health care sector in Canterbury-Bankstown over the past four years, making it the second larget employment sector.

“People are living longer, due to the introduction of new technologies and medical breakthroughs, and we, as a nation, must keep pace with the growing need to provide ongoing care. As a result, more jobs are being created to meet the demand.

“I am looking forward to the arrival of the new $1.3 billion Bankstown Hospital, promised by the NSW Government. That facility, coupled with the possible construction of a new private hospital at Revesby, will be significant employers. I anticipate other supporting health services will be established nearby, creating a new health precinct.”
