Mayor Tom Tate is urging all Gold Coasters to join the national organ donor register during DonateLife Week. 

After meeting with Kristen Eller, the sister of organ donor Dane Searls today, Mayor Tate said discussing organ donation with loved ones was of vital importance.

“With only 28 per cent of Queenslanders registered, I really encourage people to talk to their family and friends about their donation decision,” he said.

“More than 1,400 Australians are on waiting lists for a life-saving transplant - many of these are Gold Coasters.

“Registration is so important - 9 out of 10 families agree to a donation proceeding when the deceased is a registered organ donor. It gives families peace of mind knowing their loved one’s wishes are fulfilled.”

Dane Searls was a champion BMX rider who passed away in November 2011, aged 23, as the result of a non-biking related accident. His donation saved three lives.

Dane’s sister Kristen said she felt so proud and honoured to know that her brother has given others a second chance at life.

“Every day Dane lived his life pushing limits, breaking boundaries, doing what he loved to do, and doing it without fear,” she said.

“Our family hopes that the recipients get a chance to do this as well - push limits, break boundaries and do what they love to do.

“It is very humbling to know that my brother lives on in other people, and I know they must be so thankful for the gift that never ceases to stop giving: life.”
