Beautification projects to shine a spotlight on smaller towns

Small towns aren’t left behind as the Western Downs Regional Council revamps outdoor spaces across the region as part of the ongoing parks and gardens beautification project.

The Council’s commitment to enhancing our public spaces has seen positive updates to our outdoor places, including the returfing of Tara’s skatepark and a newly constructed rock-climbing wall.

Meandarra can also look forward to some exciting renovations, with plant boxes promising cheerful spring colours as well as new park benches set to be placed in the cemetery and along the main streets.

Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman says the inclusion of our smaller towns makes for a more attractive-looking Western Downs, with more inviting outdoor spaces for locals and tourists alike.

“Improving our green spaces and making the Western Downs an even better place to live, work and play has always been a top priority for Council, which is why we have initiated the region-wide beautification project,” she said.

“We’ve already seen great results in Chinchilla and Dalby, with the Chinchilla Botanic Parkland upgrade and the 8,000 trees planted along the Warrego Highway, but the project is not just about our larger towns.

“Smaller communities such as Tara and Meandarra are receiving equal attention and undergoing improvements, adding to the unique features of these towns.

“Liveability in any community is important, and I can’t wait to see more transformations come to life.”

Upgrades to the rest of the region include new welcome signs for Miles and Dalby, the Warrego Highway landscaping upgrades, and a new dog park and footpath network connecting the Big Melon, Visitor Information Centre and Botanic Parklands in Chinchilla.

Local resident and early childhood educator for Play2Learn Kaylea Gravolin is excited about the most recent renovations to Tara and Meandarra.

“The new grass at the parks has created a much more attractive space for us to use for our playgroups, it’s pleasant and inviting, and the children love running around the soft grass in their bare feet,” she said.

“The children also tell me that they love pointing out all the flowers in the new garden boxes as they walk along the main street.”

“These upgrades have really increased attendance to these outdoor spaces, despite the colder weather, and we’re definitely going to see a lot more visitors to the park in the warmer months.

“We’re all really impressed.”
