This August our seniors will be enjoying a wide range of activities across the Western Downs region, including free morning teas, light yoga and trivia mornings to celebrate Seniors month.

With over 40 activities lined up including gallery exhibitions and guided museum tours, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said that these activities are a social highlight for our more mature community members.

“It’s great to see our seniors actively involved in social events and learning new skills to show off to their friends and families,” she said.

Local venues are opening their doors to host a range of activities with gardening, photobook and jewellery making workshops one of the items that is sure to be a hit in Bell, Chinchilla, Dalby and Jandowae.

“For those who love to interact with the younger generation, we have grandparent’s Storytime sessions lined up at some of our libraries, plus other exciting group activities including local choir performances.”

Meandarra, Miles and Moonie will be treated to photobook workshops, and Tara and Wandoan can expect free morning teas during August.

Coordinator for the 50 and Better Program Debbie Callaghan says Seniors month is always a great time for the over-50s in the community.

“This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Tara 50 and Better Program, which is a massive achievement,” she said.

“We’ve lined up a delicious cake for our Annual Morning Tea on August 22, and we’ve invited several people to attend that were at the first ever Morning Tea back in 1994,” she said.

The Tara 50 and Better Program focuses on preventing isolation in people over 50 and making sure they maintain important social relationships.

“Our older citizens really look forward to Senior’s month each year because it’s a great opportunity for them to catch up with friends and even learn a new skill. All our seniors tell us that the program and the activities have brought good into their lives, which is amazing feedback.

“Everyone is really excited for the movie premier this year, which is set to be a really enjoyable day out.”

Senior’s month kicks off on August 1 with photobook workshops in Chinchilla and Dalby.
