This Sunday’s Byron Community market (4 August 2019) will be held at Dening Park on the beachfront between the Byron Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and Clarkes Beach.
The monthly market will be held on the beachfront for approximately six months from August 2019 to January 2020 while Council completes stage one of the Byron Bay bypass.
The markets are normally held at the Butler St Reserve but because of the construction schedule for the bypass a new, temporary location had to be found.
Claire McGarry, Place Manager Byron Bay, said both Council and the market managers had undertaken an exhaustive search on both Council-managed and privately-owned land for a location for the markets for the next six months and Dening Park was the most viable location.
In order to reduce the environmental and community impacts of the market on the foreshore, the market has been downsized from 350 stalls to 290 stalls.
“We encourage residents and visitors to continue their great support of this much-loved local market at its temporary new location,” Ms McGarry said.
“The market has been operating in Byron for more than 30 years and provides income for a large number of local small businesses and their families and we hope the community will get behind the local stallholders and make the most of the beachside location.”
This Sunday’s market coincides with the Byron Writers Festival and Council is encouraging anyone travelling in to town to consider carpooling, cycling, walking or catching the solar train to avoid heavy traffic in the town centre.
“For those that do need to drive, take the opportunity to park down near the Byron Bay Rec Ground or off Shirley St and walk the short distance into the town centre,” Ms McGarry said.
“Byron is busy on any Sunday so we ask that people allow a bit of extra time to get to the market.”
