Ambon Night – Celebrating a 30 Year Sister City Relationship

City of Darwin is co-hosting a special event, Ambon Night, with the City of Ambon and the Indonesian Consulate on Thursday 1 August to celebrate the 30 Year Sister City cooperation between Ambon and Darwin. The public are invited to attend and food and beverage will be available for purchase.
Ambon Night will be held at the Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association and is an opportunity to share culture through food, song and dance. Dignitaries from Darwin and Ambon will be attending the event.
As part of the celebration, crews from across Australia will depart Darwin in the Spice Islands Darwin Ambon Yacht Race on Saturday 3 August.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said “These events promote cross-cultural understanding and strengthen our Sister City relationship with Ambon and the people of Indonesia.”
“Our relationship with Ambon dates back to World War 11 and the Sister City partnership we signed in 1988 has cemented and formalised our already strong relationship.”
“Sister City relationships are extremely important; they open doors to opportunities for Darwin to access international markets and have the potential to benefit our economy.”
NT Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia Mr. Dicky Soerjanatamihardja acknowledged the long relationship between Darwin and Indonesia “I would like to congratulate the City of Ambon and the City of Darwin for celebrating 30 years as Sister Cities.”
“I have witnessed strong cooperation between the two cities, especially in the areas of education exchange visits for students and teachers, the popular Ambon Night Concerts and the annual Spice Islands Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race.”
“I trust that this cooperation will stay strong for many more years to come.”
City of Darwin has six Sister City partnerships including Ambon; Anchorage, Dili, Haikou, Kalymnos and Milikapiti.
Sister Cities is a global movement that focuses on developing relationships between cities share historic, social, cultural and geographical similarities.
