If you have an old printer gathering dust, a microwave you have not yet disposed of or broken appliances and power tools taking up space, you can now recycle them free at Wyndham’s Refuse Disposal Facility (municipal tip).

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said electronic waste, known as e-waste, is growing three times faster than the rate of standard municipal waste and contains many potentially hazardous and valuable materials.

“To help protect our environment and recover more precious resources, the Victorian Government has banned all e-waste from going to landfill since 1st July 2019,” Cr Marcus said.

“What that means for Wyndham residents is that e-waste cannot be disposed of in residential bins anymore.”

“If your unwanted appliances have batteries or cords, they can be taken to Wyndham’s Refuse Disposal Facility e-waste recycling facility free of charge.”

“As well as this, we have found a new way to recycle our old mobile phones while caring for our gorilla friends in the wild.”

“If you love visiting the gorillas at Werribee Open Range Zoo, you can help their wild cousins from the threat of extinction by recycling your old mobile phones through the Zoos Victoria’s They’re Calling on You program.”

“The mineral coltan is used in technology such as mobile phones, with mining in central Africa causing deforestation and loss of gorilla habitat.”

“Through They’re Calling on you, old phones are recycled and refurbished, with funds raised in support of the Gorilla Doctors – who provide life-saving medical care to wild Mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas.”

You can drop off your mobile phones at the new marked bin at the Wyndham Refuse Disposal Facility.

For a convenient way to dispose of your e-waste, visit our pop up e-waste recycling events at Hoppers Crossing, Truganina, Tarneit and Manor Lakes in July and August, visit https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ewaste for details.
