Garage sale gurus will think all their Christmases have come at once as Frankston City once again joins the biggest collective garage sale weekend of the year, Garage Sale Trail
Happening in October each year, the event encourages people to reuse and reduce waste and minimise their impact on the environment by hosting and shopping at garage sales.
The Frankston Treasure Chest located at the Frankston Regional Recycling and Recovery (FRRRC) in Skye has signed up to host a sale for the second year, and Langwarrin resident John Stoermer couldn’t be happier.
“I come to the Treasure Chest every day to see what I can find and there’s always a little hidden gems to be found,” Mr Stoermer said.
FRRRC Gatehouse Operator Di Shingles, who has been working at the centre for three years, praised the initiative.
“It’s a brilliant event and will stop a lot of reusable items from entering landfill,” Ms Shingles said.
“We often find ourselves drowning in possessions we don’t use anymore, so we end up throwing them out with little thought about where they end up.
“It’s important to remember that your unwanted items could be a treasure for someone else. Not everything has to end up in landfill.”
Frankston City Mayor Michael O’Reilly said the free event was a fantastic way to raise money and reduce landfill waste.
“Whether you’re a household, a student, community group, a whole street, school or even a local business. You can fundraise for a cause or make yourself a few extra dollars,” the Mayor said.
“This is Frankston City Council’s second Garage Sale Trail, last year taking an outstanding achievement award for its involvement and ranking 12 out of 150 councils participating.
“We had a mammoth 213 garage sale events registered in Frankston City last year with 5,802 people taking part equating to 531 kilograms of items being reused and saved from landfill per event.”
He said 70 per cent of residents involved said the event helped them connect with their local community.
Almost 400,000 Australians joined the bargain hunting frenzy in 2018 at more than 18,000 garage sales around the country.
More than $2.5 million was raised for charities, local communities and households.
